Guide
Responsible use of Google Maps data
Published 8 October 2026 · Gmap Data guides. Not legal advice.
Building a business list from Google Maps raises two separate questions: what the platform's terms allow, and what your outreach rules require. This guide explains how Gmap Data handles Google-derived data and the checks to run before you send anything.
It is factual and deliberately does not give legal advice or claim compliance on your behalf.

The short answer
Google Maps business listings are published for customers to find businesses, not as a free database for bulk reuse. Using them responsibly means three things: build on the platform's official APIs where you can, carry the attribution and retention rules that apply to Google-derived data, and treat outreach law as your own responsibility rather than the tool's.
This guide is not legal advice. It explains what Gmap Data does and the questions to ask before you build a list or send a campaign.
What counts as public business data
- A listing is what a business chose to publish to Maps users: name, address, phone, website, hours, category, ratings.
- It is business data, not personal data, unless it identifies an individual - and contact emails found on a website can be either.
- Businesses publish contact details so customers can reach them, which is why role inboxes like info@ are common.
- Data that is not published - private profiles, review authors, personal social accounts - is out of scope for this workflow.
How Gmap Data handles Google-derived data
- Searches and place lookups run through Google's official Places APIs rather than browser automation of the Maps interface.
- Exports append Google's required attribution notice to rows that contain Google-derived fields; first-party-only rows do not carry it.
- Google-derived coordinates are cleared from saved records after 30 days, while the business record, its identifiers and the other fields are kept.
- Accounts are isolated: runs, businesses, contacts, projects and exports are owned by the account that created them.
- Suppression is respected: an opt-out or recorded bounce keeps a contact out of outreach-ready state.
- The product never probes mail servers; verification runs through provider accounts you connect.
What to check before you build or send
Read the platform terms
Google's Maps Platform terms govern how Google data may be cached, displayed and reused. If you build your own tooling, review them before storing anything.
Know your outreach rules
Consent, opt-out, unsubscribe and privacy obligations depend on your market and the type of contact. Role inboxes and personal addresses carry different duties.
Keep records of provenance
Know where each address came from. Gmap Data stores the discovery source per email; keep that context when you export.
Honour opt-outs immediately
A suppression entry should stop future contact and future exports, not just lower a score.
Minimise what you keep
Keep the fields you use, and avoid duplicating raw data into systems with weaker controls than the source.
Things this guide does not decide for you
- Whether a specific outreach campaign is lawful in your jurisdiction.
- Whether your use of extracted data fits the platform's terms for your product shape.
- What retention period your business should apply beyond the product's built-in handling.
- Whether a specific email address is personal data under the rules that apply to you.
A practical checklist
- Use official APIs or a tool built on them where possible.
- Keep attribution on Google-derived exports.
- Do not scrape personal profiles for contact data.
- Never guess email addresses; record what was published.
- Keep suppression in every export and every campaign.
- Document where each contact came from.
- Re-check your terms and rules when your workflow changes.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Is scraping Google Maps legal?
That depends on how you collect and use the data and on the rules that apply to you; it is not something a tool page can answer for your case. Gmap Data uses Google's official Places APIs and applies Google's attribution and retention rules. For your own tooling, review the platform terms and take advice where needed.
Does Gmap Data give legal advice or compliance certification?
No. It supplies data, provenance and suppression handling. Outreach law and platform terms compliance remain the user's responsibility.
How long does Gmap Data keep Google coordinates?
Google-derived latitude and longitude are cleared from saved records after 30 days. The business record, its place id and the other fields are kept.
Can I use business emails for cold outreach?
That depends on your market, the type of address and the rules that apply to you. Keep records of where each address was published, honour opt-outs, and take advice for your jurisdiction.
What does the attribution column mean?
It is appended to exports that contain Google-derived fields and carries Google's required notice. Keep it in place when you share or re-import the file.
