How to export Google Maps data to Google Sheets

Published 8 October 2026 · Gmap Data guides

The dependable route from a Google Maps business list to a Google Sheet is CSV: export, import, then keep the sheet updated with a place_id comparison. This guide walks through the exact steps, the settings that matter and the mistakes that cost time.

It also states plainly that Gmap Data does not offer a customer Google Sheets connector - CSV is the export path.

New accounts are invite-only while we onboard early customers.

The short answer

Export the list as CSV, then import the file into Google Sheets (File → Import → Upload, or paste into a blank sheet). CSV is the reliable bridge because every tool can produce it and Sheets opens it without a connector.

Gmap Data's customer export path is CSV. Its Google Sheets writer is an operator-workspace tool and is not offered to customer accounts, so the import route below is the one to use.

Why CSV first, even when a direct connector exists

  • The file is a snapshot you control: you can archive it, diff it against next month's list, or hand it to someone without access to your tool.
  • Columns are stable and additive in Gmap Data, so a template you build once keeps working when new fields appear.
  • Direct connectors can silently append duplicates; with a file you decide exactly what merges.
  • A CSV can be imported into any spreadsheet or CRM, not just Sheets.

Step by step: CSV to a Google Sheet

  1. Export the list

From the Businesses view, a run or a project, download the CSV. A project export reads live contact evidence at export time.

  2. Create a blank sheet

In Google Sheets choose Blank spreadsheet. Importing into an existing sheet with data risks misaligned columns.

  3. Import the file

File → Import → Upload, choose the CSV, set the import location to Replace current sheet, and keep "Convert text to numbers, dates and formulas" off for phone numbers and postal codes.

  4. Name the header row

Freeze row 1 and keep it untouched. Stable headers are what let you re-import or connect the sheet to a CRM later.

  5. Work the data

Filter on category, business status, website presence or email quality; add your own columns to the right of the imported ones.

Keeping the sheet updated

  • Re-import to a second sheet and compare on place_id, the stable Google identifier for each business.
  • Append only rows whose place_id is not already in the sheet; that is the spreadsheet equivalent of a skip-recently-seen refresh.
  • Never deduplicate on name and address text: spacing, abbreviations and language differences create false duplicates.
  • If the list feeds outreach, mirror your suppression list in the sheet or keep suppression handling in the source tool so it cannot leak back in.

Column tips that save time

  • Keep place_id as text and treat it as the external key for CRM imports.
  • Format phone numbers as text so leading zeros and country codes survive.
  • Leave the trailing google_attribution column in place: it carries Google's required notice on rows that contain Google-derived fields.
  • Empty cells mean the listing or website did not publish that field; do not replace them with guesses.

Common mistakes

  • Importing into a sheet that already has headers in different positions.
  • Letting Sheets convert phone numbers to numbers (losing leading zeros) or long postal codes to scientific notation.
  • Editing the header row and then re-importing a fresh file over it.
  • Deleting the attribution column before sharing the sheet.
  • Treating a snapshot as live data: a sheet is a copy from the moment of export.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can Gmap Data write directly to a Google Sheet?

Not for customer accounts. The Google Sheets writer is an operator-workspace tool; customers export CSV, which imports cleanly into Sheets with the steps above.

How do I avoid duplicates when refreshing a sheet?

Import the new export to a second sheet and append only rows whose place_id is not present in the existing sheet. place_id is stable; name and address text is not.

Why do phone numbers lose their leading zeros in Sheets?

The import converted them to numbers. Re-import with "Convert text to numbers, dates and formulas" turned off, or format the column as plain text before pasting.

Can I connect the sheet to a CRM?

Yes, but a stable header row matters more than the connector. Keep row 1 unchanged and map columns once in your CRM; future exports append new columns at the end rather than moving existing ones.

Does importing a CSV cost anything?

No. Importing is a Sheets operation. Credits are consumed only when a business is saved in Gmap Data, not when you export or import.
